dont impale your self accidentally on one of its spines either, hurts like a gnarly bee sting.

Well, they live to be like 70 years old so he has a lot of growing left to do. Looks like a Diadema sp.

The spawning events tend to happen in response to stress. Sometimes just poking them around a bit is enough to trigger it. Changes in salinity, temp, pH, basically anything that would mean it was SOL in nature can trigger it. It is sort of a last move bailout before death thing.

In a small tank such as yours, it could cause a swing in the water quality, but it is quite innocuous in larger systems so it probably isn't a big deal. In a more mature and stocked system, it is a great plankton producer, though at the cost of basically whatever it decides to eat, which ranges from algae all the way to your favorite coral.
There is something fishy going on here...

my urchin would come out and spawn monthly on the full moon cycle. he would do his thing then i would get massive polyp extension from my corals as they were eating up all the urchin schutz..

FYI spines do hurt like a b****. i have gotten one. combine went well. pix in a few days. want the fish to settle in and stop with the territory crap. Nice crab by the way. kinda fuzzy. lol. my goal is to move the bigger crabs to the ten gallon. hopefully i can find someone who could take them off my hands when they get too big for my set up. any ideas on how to catch the little guys so that i don't cause them pain and viseversa...???????????? nets don't work the crawl out of them quite quickly i might add. lol. If i missed any ones questions let me know and i will happily reply

urchins hurt reall REALLY bad..

when i moved here from hawaii, my buddies told me i couldnt move to So CAl and tell folks i lived in the North Shore and never went surfing....

so they took me surfin.... it was summer time, the north shore is flat like a lake then with maybe a one foot little swell sometimes...  and they had me on a huge board, i guess that makes it easy to learn, but even with a big You better mean it as in 'donkey' board and really good surfer buddies tryin to help me i couldnt get up...

I ended up fallin' / steppin off the board, (the water was about 1-2 foot deep) and stepped on an urchin...

damn if i didnt have about two dozen spines stuck into the bottom of my foot...  my friends are laughin volunteerin' to tinkle on me...   hehehehehe

so, i moved to So Cal with a big ole surfin' accident...

is that good enuf story???
