Back from the ranch and had a blast. If you ever get to go take it. its worth it. its the Crazy Mountain Ranch in Montana. its great. anyway had my brother and his wife stay at my house while i was away to make sure there wasnt any floods and feed the fish, hermits and dog. and 75 gal is doin good so far. Think i am going to put the four clowns i have in it but thinkin about putting the babies in first so that they are the first to claim territory and i can use their tank to start a fuge. or atleast the stuff in it. lol. (two clowns are really small and two are big. big ones are in with the damsels in a 36 gallon and babies in ten.) pics soon...

question. well more of a what you think. lol. ammonia in the 75 has went from .5 to .25. i been thinking when it hits 0 i am gonna move the damsels over to get it ready for the four clownfish. I think the damsels will help it cycle faster cause the two little clowns are rapidly out growing the ten gallon that they are in. thought they would be ok til i can get the 75 to cycle. what i want ot know is if it will hurt the damsels to go in before it finishes cycling? also where can i get good cheap LR

fish dont help a tank cycle... it is the ammonia they excrete that helps the tank and if you have ammonia already then putting more fish will ultimately be a really bad thing...

the tank needs to finish it's cycle.. make sure your rocks are ok and things are circulating well..

it could be a lot of things, the best way to start diagnosing is to test for what we can... and rule out those things...

so, please perform your basic tests, ammonia, pH, etc.. and get back to us... so we dont have to suggest or consider things that are too easily ruled out

ammonia is definately high.. immediate water changes to bring it down...

and then try to determine why your live filtrration system isnt keeping up with the bio load.

as for the fish, i would either qt him or treat the tank if you dont have other stuff in it...

not sure if desal would be sufficient or if antibiotics if it is inflamation of the gill.. and if it is,, it really isnt good news...

but the antibiotics will keep it from become worst...

i would focus on why your tank isnt converting hte ammonia better...

not enuf rocks?  not enuf water changes??? both???

Can you get a pic of the wound? If you can see his actual gills, something is seriously wrong and you should probably just euthanize him. If you are saying he has a big open sore on his operculum, it is more than likely a bacterial infection, or possibly brooknyella - aka clownfish disease - either way, QT is the only solution.

There is something fishy going on here...

its almost like the gills are uncovered on his right side. been trying to get a pic but he moves too fast. lol. i will keep trying but til then what can i do besides water change and testing. he is eating and everything. could he have been stung by an appie? would it cause that? if it was ammonia wouldnt it be on both sides? Never has a sick fish before and i want to keep him alive and swimming.  Thanks

Probably your test kit is expired or contaminated. I feel like my old test kits start showing traces of ammonia even when I am certain there is none.

If you can see his gills, either it is a GNARLY physical trauma with a secondary bacterial infection, or a just a really gnarly bacterial infection...

I would get him into a QT and give him a sulfa-dip, if they make that for fish. Some sort of anti-biotic, a well-varied diet and fiercely clean water is the only way he could survive, but even then it is a toss-up. I have seen fish literally waste away to the bone once an infection like that sets in.

One of the few things that meth blue is good for is to relieve gill issues due to NH3 poisoning, so a MB bath would be indicated if you suspect that.

Otherwise, you could try triple sulfa or Furan 2.  Both are good broad spectrum antibiotics.

If you suspect gill flukes, go with praziquantel.
