whats near the top? snails or crabs? both of mine are everywhere and the crabs loved to get to my nassarius..i have hardly any left. and any unsuspecting snail i have on the sand will be greeted by a murderer!!!!

as for plants there are some for salt tanks..and i sure remember those diatom blooms and some of u guys mite remember that weird algae i had on the sand? well alls cleared up now except the green stuff on the glass to scrape off

every new tank has it's "algae cycle", and the diatom bloom is the first one to show up.  many tend to get a bit of red cyano in the beginning as well (we're seeing a bit in the 100 gal ATM, and it's NOT lack of current).  this is one of the things that the maturation process deals with.  the systems need to balance out and stabilize, and it takes time.

as for plants, there are lots of choices for macro algaes as well as some true vascular plants for SW tanx...i have macro in most of my setups.

I seem to be down to one hermit now  ???, I did have three!!!

However, my snails still keep disappearing :(, and nothing ever looks responsible; weird eh?

That is weird!

I also started with 3 hermits, now down to 2. Thought I lost another one a few days back....found what I *thought* was a dead crab, turns out it was just the remains from his molt  8) He's BACK!

Still snail-less. The diatom has calmed down a bit. I might wait until after the holidays to get them, it'll be a busy few weeks.

Why would you take the shells out? You seem to think the crabs are killing the snails for the shells, so if that is indeed the case, wouldn't you want to leave them in there? I personally have never had trouble with hermits killing snails, although every once in a while I see one wearing a margarita shell on its back.

You can just buy a bag of nassarius shells for dirt cheap and throw them in your tank for the hermits. That is what I do.

Nassarius snails are STRONG and fast as all hell. I can't imagine a hermit catching and killing one. Are you sure that they are being killed and not just starving to death in an immature tank?
There is something fishy going on here...

As of now the only shells that are in the tank that are large enough are ON the hermits. I placed an order yesterday on ebay for some extra shells. Hoping that'll help keep them away from the snails once I get them.
They are pretty too...so hopefully those fashion conscious hermits we all seem to have will appreciate them  ;D

Tania - I had to laugh at your statement about what your supplier may think. I'm sure that must be frustrating though  :-\
