Resuming The Aiptasia Attack!!!
« on: January 18, 2010, 10:48:28 AM »
It's been a few weeks since the Berghia Nudibranches went in to the tank, and having only seen an increase in the aippy population :'( ,
I've finally resorted to buying the Aiptasia - X  :(.

Didn't really want to, but I'm at my wits end now, as there are over thirty of them!!! That's only the visible ones too  :o

I read back through previous threads, and realise the Aipt'- X may not be a long term solution  :-\ , but also read that it won't
harm the Nudi's either hopefully, so thought perhaps it'll help reduce them a little? And maybe give the Nudi's a fighting chance.....if they are still alive :-\

Anyway, followed instructions, shutting tank down for 15 min's etc, applied the stuff to the disc of the aippy, expecting them to recoil from
it, as is usual with Kalkwasser, but they loved it  ;D, so treated approximately ten of them, and am now waiting for the IMPLOSION!!!! 8) 8)

The war resumes!!!!! ???

Says in the instructions, the aippy may close if the applicator touches it, so it has been designed to be applied near the disc;
Apparently it contains 'stuff' the nem' likes, and it will voluntarily ingest it....all rather sci-fi eh? :o

About two /three minutes after application, the aippy slowly closed, and all I could see was the -X. It seemed to coagulate around the nem'!!!
It hasn't re-opened, so assuming something is happening...lights out now, so will have a better idea tomorrow morning when lights go on again. :-\

It's soooo exciting, feels like espionage ;D..my stealth attack....sad eh?

good luck with the -X.

The kids had fun playing with them for a while. One of the rocks I got in a "deal too good to pass up" had a huge rock with probably 30-50 of them on it.  I put it in a bucket to try different "removers" in hopes I could save the live rock.  The kids got some chop sticks (I was trying to use them to pull the things off the rock), and had fun poking them, and making them "hide".

there is a process to treat rocks that basically kills everything on it... most folks refer to this process as coooking... although it has nothign to do with heat...

but basically cover the rocks in saltwater, lower the temp to about 70, and one small power head...

change 100% of the water every week and in 3-4 months, you have nice clean, un-cured live rock...

Will I then have to re-cure the rock ??? apologies for sounding sooo blonde!!

I'm going to go with the Aiptasia-X now, or at least until I've used it all....I have spent sooo much money on trying to get on top of the nem's problem :o, it's sad.

The treated ones looked like footballs this morning, and the corals near them seemed happier too.
Fingers crossed... ;)

I only noticed them once they were established !!!
They just grow so prolifically, you can't miss them.
I now go according to the rule of 'if I haven't introduced it, watch it like a hawk' :-\

Four days into  the Aiptasia - X, and hurraah ;D

They are dropping like droppy things!!!

There were more than I originally thought, have treated around 50 of them up to now, and can still see 10 or so to get 8)

Methinks that there will be many more, as there are areas I cannot get to  ???

So...verdict at the moment, one £15 bottle of Aiptasia-X has done a far better job than £60 worth of Berghia Nudibranches.

BTW, there is no sign whatsoever of the nudi's ???

I thought they might start foraging as soon as the aippy population started to reduce, and I would then be able to remove  and return them to the guy who sold them to me in the first place.....now wondering if he has a 'lucrative' business there :-\
