Hi people :)
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:39:51 PM »
Hello, I'm OCtrackiepacsg1, but you can refer to me as OC.
I have a 29g with a 3 Green Spotted Puffers (2 too much, I know), I have a 2.5 minibow with a Betta and a 14g SW tank with an Astrea and Turbo snail still confused on tankmates to get. I've googled too many questions on google without an answer, so I finally gave this place a shot. I'm a newb at this, so I'll be asking the questions here! This place has the same skin as another forum I'm part of..

This is the one of the only thing I got representing my tanks

hey oc, welcome to the little ocean

I love your video... they are absolutely cute... they are small now, but im guessing you are right, you will have to give some of your fish to greg... heheheheh

This 'skin' on this forum is the standard/basic skin...im lazy and havent really looked at changin the skins or modifying things too much.. I would love to see some more traffic and maybe some more support before i invest more labor/effort...

Plus, I am not really that web master smart... so, hopefully, if i get more traffic, I will find someone who knows and has done this type of stuff before and thinks it is uber easy...

anyways, pleae feel free to join in any conversation and dont forget to check out the chatroom.. it has been REALLY SLOW lately as lots of folks are from east coast and europe and they log on at different times and ultiamtely dont find folks just like we dont find folks online at the same time..

If i can get more traffic and more folks loggin onto the chatroom, Im sure it will grow and be like other forums in the so cal area.  and probably everywhere else..

it's just a matter of numbers/population...

anyways, thanks again for checkin us out

Thanks, I need some help in setting up my tank. I'm brand new in the SW business been stuck in FW for 5 or so years.
I've got a 14g tank, 10lbs of cured rock with a turbo snail, astrea snail and a scarlet hermit crab. I really don't know where to go from here on. I'm interested in a shrimp but they cost a buttload. Don't know what to believe from the stats online since one site says Clowns can be kept in a 5g while another says the minimum is 30g.

yea, 5 gallon is way too small for everything...

but, it can be done, but it is way harder then larger tanks... that being said... your tank is ok

as for what to do next, you need to test for nitrites and ammonia... and let us know the results...

until then it is not reccomended you add any critters as the tank is not cycled enough to process the ammonia/waste

fw is way different in one regards... filtration.. to fw folks filtration is a machine that has 'filters'/pads/floss'

this machine needs to be maintained for the filter to work efficiently..

in SW, the filter is the sand and rock.. and the organisms that grow on them... until you have a sufficient population of orgainsims they wont be able to handle the amount of waste that the critters leave behind...

you can have a machine on a saltwater system, but it solely for removal of particulate matter, which for those that dont have a machine dont seem to have a problem with... but for some reason, fw and newbies love machines that do something... they cant grasp that organisms actually do all the work...  the only job is to find the right combination of critters v organisms...

Do I even need a filter then? I mean I got circulation covered with the powerhead. I've got 10lbs of live rock. I tested my water nitrate is 20ppm, no nitrites.
I've had that rock for 5 weeks, the snails for 3 and the hermit for 2.

not really, but it depends on how much rock and sand you ahve and how and what type of critters...

a filter is 'ok', but you really have to stay on top of cleaning out those pads/thing's....   they basically just trap and hold the particulate/food/waste stuff under the water to be constantly 'rinsed' back into the water, perpetuating the need for the organisms to do thier job...

I feel a little intrusive asking question and not helping..though I know nothing about SW.
But...
What is the next step for now?
Also
There are these little white fuzz balls their semi clear semi white growing on my rock and new ones sprout occasionally there is also a white film/cobweb looking stuff in my tank. What are they?

no worries on supporting the forum now with answers, (unless someone happens to ask something you might be more knowldgable about)

so please dont be apprehensive...

as for the white fuzz balls, and cobwebs, i agree with jake/psykokid   sounds like sponge for the cobweb stuff...

the fuzz ball, might be sponge also... try to look up some images on saltwater sponge....

see if they are similar, and if not, try to get some pics...

definitely, don't sweat not having all the answers, none of us do, but we all have our strong points, and guess what?  when we were noobs, we had NO answers, but a lot of questions too.  what we're doing, besides getting a chance to discuss the hobby and meet new people is giving something back to the hobby we enjoy so much, and hopefully, others will do the same as they get some experience under their belts, and maybe even have something new to offer.

as for the hitchikers, the webbing could be a sponge, it could be bacterial growth from uncured LR, or maybe even the "net" of a Vermetid gastropod.

here's a pictorial HH guide that may be helpful (Lionfish Lair is my wife's and my website, but there's no forum yet):  http://www.lionfishlair.com/hitchhiker/hitchhiker.shtml

scroll down to "sessile" critters and look to see if anything jumps out at you in terms of ID.
