to tank of not to tank?
« on: June 29, 2010, 11:51:42 PM »
Well, they got the goldfish. 5 orandas, and one black moor. My dad today when he was going to sleep so the goldfish light was not on. He said, " You didn't turn the goldfish light on?" "Its not my tank!", I didn't say that, never smart off to a parent, you just can't win :(.
Anyways, I've been feeling the itch for another tank, especially since I planned the stocking already when my dad annouced to guest that we were getting goldfish. I have a spare filter, my 14g fowlr would need a real hood if I wanted to get cool corals. All I would need is a tank and a heater. Question is, should I dare to ask them for permission for another tank? I mean, I've have been getting quite of lot of pets recently a bird, a tank. But with the 29g out of my care, I only have the 14g and the 2.5g left.

Well I've been researching the feng shui stuff so I can counter it and help me use it if I push for another tank.

I found this...

If any of your fish die, replace them immediately with bigger, more expensive ones.

yeah, no need to find the source of the problem just make it a revolving door of fish.

They also suggest 8 goldfish 1 black moor, which according http://www.aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor.php, you would need a 140 gallons.
Soon after the guy that suggest that stocking level says....
I found that most of the goldfishes do not last more than 9 months.. maybe I am lousy at rearing the fishes but I found they have " shorter " lifespan.

I know, its hypocritical to say since we all started that way, but if you really want to develop "tranquility and peace of mind" you need to research and be able to relax that you are giving your fish a healthy life.

Edit
I found this 2 seconds after posting this.

Furthermore, they can only live between 6 months to 3 years only.

ok, to counter your 6 months to 3 years thing with an exception to the rule:

My sister got this goldfish one time from some church carnival or something of the sort. I dont remember the situation but whatever. My sister was in 5th or 6th grade at the time.. Fast forward to 2003, I go back home to see my sister graduate from highschool. She still has that little gold fish, yet it wasnt so little anymore. they kept putting it in bigger and bigger tanks (my moms boyfriend bred freshwater angels and had extra tanks) it continued to grow. At this point they had stopped putting it into bigger tanks because it was getting obnoxious, it would spit or splash water at you if you walked by.. This fish lived another couple of years before it finally died of old age.. When it finally succumbed, it was about 9 inches long. Just a common gold fish mind you - nothing fancy, not a koi, just a common feeder style goldfish..

six goldfish in HOW large a tank???!!!  i guess as Jake mentioned, nobody takes into account the longevity, size, or dent even one goldfish puts on the water quality.

BTW, Pet Co has their standard size (rectangular) tanx on sale for $1/gallon.  they had 40 breeders and 55's for $40 and $55, respectively.  they also had 10's, 20L, 20H, and 29's for a buck a gallon.

Unfortunately, they do not have a 40L for my sump...I have been waiting on that damn sale, too.
There is something fishy going on here...

we thought about getting a 55 for a sump, but i think we'll use an old 55 gal acrylic that we used to tank LR in instead.  why do we need a 55 gal sump?  because we're having a custom acrylic 210 gal room divider tank built.  :0012392:

BTW, once we get moved, there may be a few surplus tanx available...mostly smaller 25 gallonish stuff.

I interpreted the 6 months to 3 years thing as, when it 3 years old, you have to kill it. I tried to tell them that 6 goldfish is equivalent to 200 neon tetras, but my mom didn't understand, all she said was, neon tetras are ugly.
I spoke to her this morning about having a tank in the study room, I had a lot of fun breeding platies and I would like to get back to that. She said she'll let me bring my 2.5 upstairs and move the betta into a bowl, which I'll never do.  I saw that petco $1 per gallon sale. Thats where I got the idea to just get a 10 gallon tank, use the hood, filter from my 14g as I don't need the filter and the hood can't support corals. I'll I would need is decor and heater.

Cards have a stronger red which is nice. Financial issues with a fish tank is not a problem, especially since the tank is 10 dollars, heater is 15-20. The new hood for the 14 may be 100 though, but shouldn't be a problem, my pets are my children. Its just having them let me get another tank thats the problem.

to be honest, unless your place gets much below the low 70's, your tank probably generates enuff heat to keep it warm enuff.  you can save $ by ditching the heater, esp. in the summer.
