Started the tank months ago. Had no idea what I was doing or what i would need to do. Then I broke my leg and couldn't afford to continue. So, at that time I only had the saltwater sand and filter.  So it was running with the filter no live inhabitants.
Now, I added more water and tested the salinity Running about 1.022-1.026. Got the 4 rocks and live sand substrate Sunday as well as a new 4 cycle filter, fully submersible shatterproof heater, new thermometer, and bubble wall.  I went to look for a skimmer but I couldn't find one. The people at the store were no help.  So, I still need to get that. Also, I was reading that I should Ghost feed. What food should I use? Right now I have nothing since I have no fishies.  I am open to all suggestions
Thanks
Folks

you dont need a skimmer, certainly you can wait on that for a bit...

you also dont need a 'bubble wall' or other bubble generator... again, this is a fresh water thing...

As for ghost feeding... this is something that some folks will do to help cycle thier tank... chances are, your tank is already cyceld since it has been up and running for a bit... if anything, it has a minimal biological filtration...

The cannister filter, is probably not needed either, but since you have it, might as well use it but it will only serve as a 'mechanical' filter... it will catch the food particles and other chunks that are in the water column...

again, this isnt really 'needed'.. the 'chunks' will settle out of the water without the cannister filter...

also, the cannister filter, if you dont clean it often, will keep that trapped food and other junk in the water column.. it has no way of removing it on it's own

the natural filter/biological filter does have a way of dealing with toxins and junk, which is why the LIVE FILTERTRATION is vital...

please do some ammonia tests and nitrite tests and salinity/pH  and let us know...

thanks

The tank has been up for a while but it has had NO INHABITANTS. So I would consider it to be in the cycling process?  The rocks in this tank have only been there for a few days. The bubble wall is purely for visual purposes.

the bubbles will cause problems and make the tank not clear... and more difficult to take pictures...

it will also mess with your pH...

again, for freshwater tanks, it is needed... they need it to oxygenate the water... you will get oxygen in the water from the filters or pumps or whatever 'surface skimming' device you have...

again, it doesnt need additional air...

it is a somewhat subjective point of view but most folks that want reef aquariums want them to look natural.. and there are too many bubble things in the ocean bottom.. nor are then castle replicas..

but, lots of folks tend to look at 'natural' as more of a 'characture' of the real thing.. so sunken cities of atlantis and treasure chests with divers approaching is what they think of...

Im thinking that if you do some more searches on the internet of reefs and reef tanks will yeild a better represtation of what is out there..

also as stated in another message, these water features dont do anything to help in maintaining your tank, and they create areas that casue problems as algae and junk grows on and in them...

they just dont seem beneficial to me, and totally cosmetic... and as such, I cant see or reccomend them in saltwater aquaria...

btw:  reefs dont have to be rocks and corals...

please take a look at Greg's pictures.. he has lots of plants and fish tanks... again, more what i consider 'natural' and extrememly healthy...

btw:  healthy to me is almost self sustaining..... that is, the least amount of human intervention needed to keep it healthy

Wow thanks for all the input!
Since my last post a couple new things have happened.
When I put my first rocks in it looked like a couple pieces broke off. Later, I realized that that was not the case in fact there are 2 snails in the tank that must have been stuck to the rocks I bought.
Yesterday I went to an actual marine store where they know what they are talking about; Aquatic Treasures. I got another 4 pieces of takoma rock ( I think that's what they are called) She also recommended to use a bottle of bacteria. So I dumped that in there(she said to use the whole thing). I also found the protein skimmer there for tank up to 30 gal and grabbed that up. Also, got a magnetic cleaner that sits on the side of the tank and you move it up and down to clean the tank sides. They explained that the formation I have in it now will probably grow stuff on it. So I may or may not leave that in there.  Going to read up on the marine testing kit and test the water. If it looks good then I'll take a sample back to Aquatic Treasure's. They said they want to test the water before selling fish. I figure that is better safe than sorry.
The snails are still alive today, so that is a good thing. As far as the bubble wall I will take it out if things are off. I didn't know that in saltwater tank could disturb things. I will update pics soon. I am so excited! I almost have things going!!!!
Yah!! I am so glad that this group is here everyone is so nice and helpful.

Good deal, glad things are moving along. My mom's boyfriend used to work at a LFS in St. Charles, MO. Not sure if its even there any more and would be quite a drive from your side of the river. The place you went to sounds good as they dont want to sell you livestock till they are sure your tank has cycled and capable of sustaining whatever you put into it. That right there is a mark of a good LFS as they sound more concerned with you having success in the hobby vs just making the sale. Sounds like you have found a winner.

i agree with jake..

they sound like they are on top of it...  if they are not going to sell until they are sure, then that shows thier loyalty is to you and not to the fast / quick buck...

good find

what is funny about 'this site' and the comradrie that is seen/felt is that so many so cali reefers dont think or know this about me...

they would say i am either split personality or just plain psychotic

What they fail to understand is thier specific role is trying to drag me into thier cesspool of drama...

And although i love my fair share of it, i think it is apparent my motivation is purely informational and entertainment.. and rarely personnal...

anyways... i still feel kinda bummed that i am 'labeled' wrongly, but, there is nothing i can do about others perceptions and to what level they will choose to persue the truth and the root of thier feelings/assesments...

oh well...

That does suck Bill but at least everybody here likes you or at least I think they do  ;) really most of us here are pretty new to the hobby and the people joining the site have been new to the hobby and everyone seems to love it here and our experience has been muy bueno!  So hopefully that makes you feel better, and im sure it does help you feel better even though the people you are referring to do not have a true idea of who and what you are about.  Plus maybe if those people were here on this site they would try and cause drama and so far this place has been drama free and thats one of the main reasons Im here.  Its awsome to know that you can come here anytime to shoot the sh!t, or come with tank problems or whatever and everybody is involved and helps out....
if at first you dont suceed, try try, oh hell, just shoot the some woof woof!!!!!!! -Bill
