I want, I want, I want..

yea, i can see the 'child' in a lto of those types of requests...

BTW:  I was asking greg the other day about spitting fish...

I guess my fish spit at me, but i cant figure out which one...

It seems that every so often, as i walk by or get ready to feed the fish, i get a a splash or two... and up until a few days ago, I have dismisssed the 'inadvertant splash as jsut that, but now, I think that these are more then jsut random events...

And they are geting good aim too as I got hit in the face the other day

now to catch which fish is actually doing the spitting

Neat, what are the inhabitants of the tank, I see a clown and a red shrimp possibly on the bottom?

NVM found out.
How big is the tank?

Hey Folks, Question....So they guy at the Aquatic Treasures said to give my tank a small square of this frozen diet. Should I crumble this? It is the Rods food.  So what happens when I drop it in some of it flakes off. Most of it sinks and the shrimp darts out and steals the piece of food.  I know he needs the food. So should I put more in? The shrimp and crabs all seem to love it. However, I am not sure if the fish are getting enough food?  I've saw them eat some but nothing like the shrimp.
Also, I have a couple small shells that look like they had hermits in them before. They've been there for days so do you guys think that the hermits died? There is a snail shell been in the same place for days also?
I'm starting to get a little concerned. All the other inhabitants seem happy and frolic about.
Also, will I need to get new shells for the hermits and snails as time goes by? Or will they live in what they have?  ???

a dozen hermits are easily twice as many as you should be stocking in a 47 gal tank, esp. if it's a new system.  what is most likely happening is that the population is self-regulating based on available food.  personally, i recommend stocking (1) hermit per 10 gals, max.  that being said, i've never fed my CUC at all.  if you feed them, they do less work.

as for shells, snails grow their own as they grow, hermits need to "trade" up to a larger shell as they grow.

you should thaw your food prior to feeding it out to the tank.  in fact, i thaw the food, rinse it, then feed it out.  this makes a huge difference in keeping unwanted DOC's out of the tank, which aids in your water quality and retards nuisance algae growth.

depndinng onyour system, and how mature it is and how big it is, you can worry about the 'juice' in the frozen cubes, but I have never worried about it... although what greg says is true, the juice, just like any uneaten foods will go to polluting your tank, with DOC/dissolved organic compounds... (basically everything)

i usually just take the cube and mush it up in my fingers under teh water surface.. this will make is melt and fall into pieces and distribute it to everyone more fairly, other wise a bigger/faster fish will grab the big chunk

Also, for your tank,  a cube might be too much.. maybe a half/part cube...  cut it while frozen put a piece back in the freezer, (in a ziploc) and feed the other piece to your tank

I cant seem to cut up my frozen cubes. I usually just put the food in a cup and melt it with tank water and distribute it out.

practice makes perfect.

Use a serated knife and start off slow and small back and forth motions, after a bit the cube will melt/cut inhalf.

I can actually cut my cube into bite sized pieces or slivers.... but then again, i love to cook, and have SOME, professional cooking experience in my post adolescent life
