UV LIGHTS Should I or Shouldnt I
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:53:34 PM »
hey Greg,
txs for the heads up on the blue dot jawfish. l do have a cover that completely covers my tank so it shouldn't be a problem. Are they a good tank mates? I'm trying to have fish that get along well together. Can anyone educate me on the UV lights? What would be adequate for a 56gal tank? Any help would be appreciated. txs everyone.

Hey,

I decided to split this topic to cover UV lights...

It seems this topic has been started (kinda)  in other subjects but not really.

Maybe this topic now that it is seperated can be discussed in more detail...

For the record, in case folks didnt know....

I like UV lights... I like the concept... I understand teh concpet as to kill some critters as they pass by the UV bulb... I also understand that the UV light wont kill everything that passes in front of it, just the critters that pass by slow enough to be affected by the UV light.  This 'DWELL' time is different for different critters.

the level of affection can be either enough to kill them outright or to alter thier DNA sp hat the affected critter can not or will not be able to to reproduce...

either way the net affect is a 'decrease' in population . . .

My goal / net affect is to decrease the population or physical count to a level that can be handled by the 'system'...i.e. handled = naturally dealt with or dealt with by the materials/foods/equipment/auto-immune, etc...

I do admit that UV lights will not create a sterile environement, and that a sterile environemnt is not a goal, nor should it be...

I also think that UV lights are over rated and that folks should not count on it as a a 'cure all' or that it will be a fix all situation... i.e.  if you have ich or some other parasite, and think that by pluggin in a UV light that it will fix that problem then you might still have that problem when you are done...

Anyways, I believe that your problem will still exist when you a done

I am pretty certain that UV is incapable of killing anything outright. It merely causes mutations in the DNA, some of which could prove to be fatal in time. We don't die or go sterile from sunburn, we just need some time to repair.

Ozone is probably a more effective sterilizing agent.
There is something fishy going on here...

agree that ozone is probably more efficient/effective at irradicating stuff, but, ozone has some issues that make it more difficult/uncomfortable in teh original setup and use

Basically, you can nuke your tank with ozone, but you cant nuke your tank with uv

so, which device do you think will sell better

OK so l invested in a 9wtt UV light and hooked it up to the exhaust hose on my eheim filter. l didn't want another pump in the tank
I'm hoping it will help with my bad algae problem. Is it okay to leave it on 24/7 ?
The protein skimmer is doing a good job of taking out whatever its supposed to because the water it collects in the cup is brown and stinky.
l also bought a reef cleaner package that contained a pretty good assortment of snails (large & small), 2 types of small hermit crabs and an emerald crab. Still trying to get a good pic of my tank.

most uv lights can be on 24/7  BUT  you really should check with the mfg to verify the flow rate...

the rate at which water flows past the light is critical to it's performance

typically the smaller the light the slower the flow...

so, although i understand not wanting a second pump, i think not utilizing the uv the way it needs to be is more of a concern
