Snail issues....
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:55:22 AM »
I find I am constantly righting my snails. Mostly the ceriths  :-\ Not a big deal....just keeps me on my toes because of the hermits. Haven't lost a single snail yet though (knock on wood).

Anyways...I have a pretty big zebra turbo. He's never spent much time on his back until yesterday. It seems every time I turn around hes laying there. I think it happened 4 times within the last 12hrs. Does this happen when they are ready to kick the bucket?? I'm thinking it's older since it's so large.

So what do I do, keep flipping him. Or let him be? Am I *babying* them? Should they be able to right themselves?
What a silly post....hehe  ;D But I am curious.

most snails will have a hard time 'righting' themselves

so, if you value your snails you will right them up side up ....

nassarius can right themselves though....

I have along acrylic rod / stick to kinda prod them so i dont have to put on my shoulder length glooves....

hehehehe

haha...okay! That's what I figured. I do value them but my husband gives me a hard time for constantly looking to see if any need flipped!!  ;D Then I thought maybe they didn't need my help.

I will continue to flip them with my elbow length gloves....hehe. I've been using a long plastic spoon but that still requires my gloves. It isnt quite long enough...

you can use chop stix, or anything really... bamboo sticks from cost plus??/

Or those stiff air line tubing they sell at the lfs....

You can use those sticks or whatever for target feeding.. just skewer the food onto the tip/end and dangle/wiggle it in front of the fish, or you can just stick it into the critters' pie hole!

for what its worth i do the same thing...right them up....but i dont have too many left now. i use an old fishing pole to poke around in there..i had this monstrous green bubble algae ball poking up thru the mushrooms and i tried to poke it finally had to put my hand in there and twist it out..of course it broke..hope the skimmer takes care of that..i do have some small colonies of those things and i DID have three emerald crabs..havent seen them either lately..hadda hurry up and get my hand out before the killer clown got me...

ok, she goes from not going to stick her hand in there or touch yucky things to going off and breakin apart a buble algae....

well, the bad news.. (and yes, there is some discussion that is 'anti' my point)

You should not dislodge or break those inthe water column..

the thought process is that these bubble are full of spores or other things that will spread the buble algae throught your tank...

uhoh...

you just released a bazillion spores... oh no!!!!!!

the 'other side of the discusson' disputes that postion, as thier theory suggests that the 'sportes' or whatever they are will not do anything if released prematurely/artifcially, as they werent ready.. if they were ready, then the bubble would have broken on it's own...

also, if youi do have cuc that eats them, then they are breaking them open while eating them, so when doesnt the population go out of control when emerald crabbs chow down...

i guess the lesson/point here is that once upon a time, cruzin carole was sooo cautious, but now, she is bold and ready to go out and do things as if she has done them a before...

hehehehe

and yes, i am giving carole a hard time, cause... it's been a while and i dont want her to think i have gotten soft in my old age....

hehehehehe

hey Ami
funny how l learn things almost every time l look around the forum.
l feel kind of dumb for not asking what specific type of critters l was adding to my tank while l was buying them. Big snails, little snails is the best l can do. Some right themselves easily while others seem to have a hard time.
l'm getting tired of the snow.
17" last week and maybe 4" more tonight. TG for my kids & snowblowers hehe.

i dont blame you for being tired of snow!!!

It was 83 degrees for the second day in a row and i was miserable!!!

I had to take off my jeans and put on shorts..

My fan for my tank was on for like 5 hours straight!!!  I might have to hook up my chiller!
