it will be abit before i do but i want to try my hand a coral. have to change out my lighting system and still need a bit more flow in some areas atm but its fine for the fish. atleast it seems to be. i wanted to see if i can find t5 lighting and i would have to build a grate or something to go over the top of the tank. also want to switch to a sump based system but now i realize how costly it is to get it started. lol. i will do it one day just not surehow soon. but i wanted to know what the lighting would be able to support for coral. it come with the tank and its supposedly made for a freshwater tropical tank. I dont believe it though. it doesnt seem bright enough. anyway. now everyone that reads knows my plans to come.  :00123102:  Any suggestions on getting t5 lighting and not having to cough up the 100 or so $$ for a new one?? Also beginers tips for coral. there is too much misinformation in online resources that is why i am trying to hear from all you you..

a picture of your lighting would help us out, at least a description of the bulb connection/end  would help...

and you can probably try mushrooms or some zoanthids...  go for green stuff or brown stuff, and of course cheap...

and ask those questions below/above... you are lookin for EASY stuff, as that usually means less light for most folks...

you can put together t5 lighting... you can gut your lighting system and install a new system in the hood/canopy...

you just need to buy the ballast and the end caps....

reflectors are nice and kinda important, and sometimes you can get reflectors and get them to fit into the stock hoods and sometimes you cant.. but as you can figure otu.. just do your best and constantly move into the right direction..

speaking of which, if you are concerned about flow... hows about gettting a new power head or two, or one at a time, and then later on, you can worry about the lighting, or the sump, and just do one thing at a time..

and speakin of sumps... they arent expensive either...  you can buy a plain ten gallon or so tank form walmart and stick a pump in it, and pump it back to the tank, and get a an over flow for cheap from craigslist or ebay, and prolly for about $50 you are up and running

you can put baffles in it later on....

again, the point is to move forward step aat a time or it will be a big chunk of change not to mention a bigger shock to the system

right. i have been doing one thing at a time. cant afford to do all i want. hell i would have to have a biger tank and house then. lol. I am on the market for a job right now so cant really afford much. I think i still have a while before i can have a sump. got to understand it before i can learn how to build one from the ten gallon tank that i have up and running now. not to mention i do as little interfearence with the tanks as possible. besides the feeding and stuff you have to do. (think yal get what i mean)

How hard are Zoas to keep??

as you may be seeing both from Bill's response as well as other threads, some tanx support different critters.  for instance, my reef was generally a "no-zoa zone"...i could pretty much grow any softy or LPS, but not zoas and not Xenia.  when i moved, the tank would finally support zoas, but when i moved again, the whole tank crashed.

now i'm back to not being able to keep zoas...i can keep Palys, i can keep 'shrooms, GSP, but zoas just barely hang on.  granted, we no longer are reefers, but we do try to add a few EZ corals to some of our setups.

yea, there can be some generalizations from the different types of corals discussed...

filter feeders might do better in 'dirtier' tanks.  i.e. tanks with typically higher nitrates, and or other DOC, dissolved organic compounds...

Hard/sps and colorful / brighter corals tend to need more pristine water...

but like all things, iut really isnt good to generalization and or in this case, extrapolate too much info from the very general issues

I made a few acquisitions today at the wholesaler. Yellow tang, atlantic blue tang, and two derasa clams that are about 2". I am sporting a regular clam garden. Pictures to follow.
There is something fishy going on here...
