Calcium Usage
« on: February 22, 2010, 03:47:25 PM »
Its amazing how much sps (stony) corals use calcium and alkalinity in a short period of time. Normally my water change cycle with the Ca in the salt was enough to replenish the calcium used by the couple of SPS pieces i have. I tested my Ca and alk midweek last week, Ca was at 460 mg/L and Alk was at 11 dKh. I tested today after adding a bunch of SPS pieces in the last week and my Ca was down to 400 mg/L and my alk was at 8 dKh. So in the span of 5 days my tank has consumed 60 mg/l of calcium and 3 dkh of alk. Going to test Mg later today and see if that has taken a hit as well. Good thing i won some calcium supplements at a raffle last night.. :) Im going to test daily for a week or so to see what my consumption is, it may be time to set up a kalkwasser drip using one of those kent aquadose things i picked up.

CAROLE and others.

this is a perfect example of the CALC/ALK discussion

the more stoney corals, the more calcium / alk they will draw from teh water...

Jake,

try to test every other day or more...  and chart the demand of calcium...

also do a test prior to the water change and one hour after to see how much was replenished to make sure you are replenishing back to your 450

If not, determine how much / large of a water change would cover that difference, (IF possible)

If then you cant meet your calcim demand, then you should do dosing...

calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are readily availbel for dosing...

but like you said, lucky you won some stuff last night.. good job btw

I'm going to get my levels back up to 450-460 and then chart from there. I need to get a salifert Ca test as the API test kit is kind of ball park as it goes in increments of 20 mg/l. The salifert is a bit more precise as it goes in increments of 10 mg/l.

Jake,

i dunno how much you top off, but IME, buffering my top off water makes a huge difference in keeping the whole pH/Ca thing "happy".  it's also what i attribute our crazy coralline growth to.

Depending on how hot it is I usually go through about a half a gallon to a gallon of top off per day. I went to water store down the street from my place today and i decided to try their "alkaline water" I asked how they raised the pH of the water and the guy was clueless, kept trying to sell me on the health benefits of it. ???  ::) Curious as to how it would work I got one of my 5 gallon jugs full of the alkaline water (which instead of my usual .25 a gallon was a buck a gallon, wish he would have told me that first.) Brought it home and broke out the test kits, checked all the params, 0 on all the stuff that should be 0, including alk. I measured the pH of the water which was 9, I was running low in my sump anyhow so I mixed up 4L of pH 9 water with 4 scoops of the Seachem reef builder which raises alk without affecting pH. That brought the alk up to 12 dKh and left the pH at 9. I also added in 2L of plain RO water to bring the pH down. That should have in theory given me a pH of 8.3. The next time I put the top off water together like that i'll measure the Ph before and after, hindsight being what it is. We'll see how things go from there..

The good thing is i can see new growth on all of the SPS stuff i have added recently, especially on that branching porites Lanny gave me on last monday.

Today's ALK and CA results are:

9 dKh ALK and 380 mg/L CA.

I added 15ml of Seachem Reef Complete Which should have raised the CA level approx 10 mg/L based on my approx water volume. Instead it has dropped 20 mg/L from yesterday's 400 mg/L. On the positive side my ALK is 1 dKh higher. I'm going to pre-buffer my normal RO top off water with some Seachem Reef Builder and check my ALK and CA tomorrow. I'm going to add the top off tonite before bed and add some CA supplement in the morning. I'll test both params in the evening again tomorrow and see what the results are. If it's still below 400 when I test tomorrow then I'm going to double the amount of Seachem Reef Complete. The max amount of this product you can add in one day is 12.5 ml per 20 gallons of water volume according to the labeling.

Welcome to my world. I need to dose calcium and buffer nearly every day on top of kalk or levels start to plummet. I have never been good enough to post my numbers on here, but you are entering the game of using kalk to topoff, adding calcium chloride and still being deficient.

Hello calcium reactor...
There is something fishy going on here...

OK, todays numbers are:

CA 420 mg/L and alk is 8 dKh

I'm going to follow the same regimen tomorrow and see where the Ca and ALK stand.

I've been using Instant Ocean and doing a 15 gal water change about every 3 weeks.

Ok.. so today things are where I like them at.. ALK is at 10 dKh and Ca is at 460.

Doing a quick calculation, the volume of Ca supplement i've been adding is 30 mL and is raising the Ca 40 mg/L.  Technically for my water volume it should be raising the Ca 60 mg/L if nothing was using it. So where is the 20 mg/L going? Into stony corals skeletons, which is a good thing. So technically now that i have my Ca levels back where they should be i should be able to add just 10 mL per day and maintain about the same amount of CA without losing any. I'm not going to add anything tomorrow and see where my levels lie. I expect the Ca to be down to 440 and the alk to be at or about 9. We shall see tomorrow how things go.
