funny how you had money for raffle tickets at the scrk meeting???? hehehe,, but yea, i know what you mean....  I didnt plan on buying anything, but ended up getting another fungia for $18... couldnt resist.. that plus i hear this type actually drops lil babies, (A LOT)

whooo hooo,  fungia farmer comin up?!?!?!?!

I also but $7 worth of raffle tickets... and i put 1-2 tickets into a couple things...I ended up winning the Bubble Magus ncl+3  skimmer... whoo hooo.. now i have two skimmers im not using... arrrrggghhhh

i gotta figure out what im doin.. i dont really want to spen money on a new sump and set it all up just for me to break it down and move in a few months... (yea, that has never left)

So, I am not sure what to do.. i really need to hook up my calc reactor as i am borderline low on ca and alk...

and i am finishing the saltwater mixing barrel today.. arrrghhh, i forgot.. i gotta go to HD as OSH didnt have 1" nipples... and the guy is trying to tell me how to use adapters and bushing to get a 1" nipple but unfortunately, i dont have 4" to play with when HD sells one that is 1-1/4" long...

i hate having to go to two and three stores to get all the stuff i need...

bill always seems to luck out at raffles. he got a set of Koralia 6 controllable power heads with the controller unit at the IMAC raffle last fall. He also won a 175W metal halide bulb for me at the same event. And this time he wins a skimmer.

I'll be a pal and break that skimmer in for you if you like Bill, least i can do :) .

The last club event that had me and lanny went to and we both won twice so i cant complain too much. The way the raffle at the SCRK meeting was sort of chaotic. They pulled your number and then you went up and picked out something from all the stuff they had on offer. Oh well.. :)

you can have the skimmer.. it is a bit smaller then i thought...

$7 is how much i spent in raffle tickets...

make it a ten dollar bill and it's yours...

btw:  there was a nice couple there that wanted that skimmer, and I will say sorry to them in case they are viewing this thread...

Jake and i are kinda really good friends and he has helped me out many many times in the past, and i really was going to use the skimmer but it really isnt big enough for a 65 gallon

Im thinking it might top out at 40 gallons but maybe 25-35 is the normal high..

It is more of a nano skimmer... so, not sure what you had planned, but, I didnt want to seem glib or inconsiderate... as i really did want it, which is why i put a ticket into the jug..

anyways, i hope Jake uses it and it works for him, if not, maybe he will let everyone know if he plans on selling it or whatever... as he too trades and buys and sells like crazy...

anyways, no hard feelings i hope,

bill

Thanks again Bill. According to the MFG the skimmer is rated from 24-80 gallons so I figure on my current tank it will be just fine. I gave it a good vinegar bath last night to remove any oils or other things from manufacturing then put it straight into the tank and let it begin breaking in. So far it seems to be pulling out a little bit of junk, but its been par for the course for the last few skimmers i've had. If this is any indication it should skim really well once its broken in.

Jake,

let us know how the skimmer works out for ya...i'm looking for a new skimmer for our 50 gal SH setup.  i finally trashed that POS ASM Mini-G that was in there as it fell apart.  it never worked well anyhow...too bitchy about water height.

the trouble i have is super limited sump space as the tank is pentagonal.  i was looking at the BM as well as the SWC as they have the proper footprint.

the bubble magus seemed well constructed.. and uber small footprint.. maybe it is a clone of the BM  skimmer  in that regards

maybe the footprint is about 8x8???

the pump fit under the skimmer stand/support

but it looked like a nano skimmer...

The bubblemagus nac-3+ is ultra small. If you fit an ASM mini G then you will have no problem fitting this puppy. My current sump under my bowfront is ultra small as it is (10Wx13Lx18H iirc) and it fits like a glove. I brought the skimmer home, gave it a vinegar bath for a while, washed it up and put it to work. Im amazed with the amount of gunk this thing is already pulling out.

Here's it installed in my sump:

Here's the skimate after about 48 hours of running on it:

And here's 72 hours of skimate colleciton:

The skimmer is very solidly built and its level adjustment is via a wedge pipe. Not one of those silly o-ring slider pipes like in the ASM. The only thing i would like to see changed is the way the powerhead seats in the bottom of the skimmer. Currently its a loose slip fit. If it were sealed via a simple o-ring it would hold together when you were to put the skimmer in the water. The pump can slip out when you are putting the skimmer into the sump. Its not too hard to get it back in, just more inconvenient than anything.

So far so good :) Thanks again Bill for hooking up the fruits of your raffle labour.

cool... looks like some wet skimmate....

I prefer the dry/gunk... but im sure your skimmer is still breakin in a bit

and yea.  CLAY, (I think he is the owner or the son of the owner or something), mentioned something about the pump, but i didnt understand him, and figured i or whomever would figure it out...

I thought he was talking about how they packaged it.. he said something about pulling the skimmer out of the box and the pump being loose or for me to make sure i didnt drop the pump while pulling it out.. or something.. but as you saw, the skimmer was wrappped up tight out of the box so nothing was loose then...

but, i am glad it is workinmg out well for you... i could have sworn you just got a new skimmer though???

must be my imagination or too many pain meds...

hehehehe

noob question, does a skimmer need to be in the sump?

no, they can be 'internal' or 'external'

BUT, the skimmer has to be built for it...

i.e. an external skimmer can probably go internal, but an 'internal' can NOT be used externally...

the internal skimmers sometimes have 'loose' fittings or connections and can leak or spill over, and if it does, it just goes back into the sump... but if it leaked when it was external, it would go NOT in teh sump...

I have an RK2   'X-FLO' 6.5  Fractionator  (Fancy name for skimmer)  And it can be internal or external

There are other discussions about internal external, and efficiency and all that.
