Girl with One fish for now
« on: March 25, 2010, 06:05:34 PM »
At the moment I have a betta in a 1 gallon tank.  I plan to get a 3 gallon tank in a few months for him.  I also plan to get some glofish and a 1.5 gallon tank for them.  Unless I need a heater for them.

Welcome! We are all saltwater types here, mainly reefers, but I think most of us dabbled in freshwater enough to be of some help. The glofish could probably be fine if they are kept at warm room temperature. There are also some really small and unobtrusive nano-heater options you could look into. They are pretty inexpensive as well.
There is something fishy going on here...

I just moved from the freshwater business, a betta would be very happy in a 3 gal and you'll feel proud that you gave your betta a life that many bettas don't get to live.
My Betta Oliver doing tricks and how to properly care for thempowered by Aeva

Heres my baby.
Glofish are modified zebra danios and their are active little buggers, you would prolly need a heater for them since their tropical fish. Another way is to buy a 10 g (kit, everything you need) which is like 38 bucks (that 2.5 minibow was 25 dollars) at walmart and put a school of danios and your betta in there and a few cories.
oh...WELCOME?!?! I would love to own Glofish but their illegal in california.

I don't know if they are legal here or not.  I need to be sure about it.  Well I'd have to get another 3 gallon tank for the glofish cause the only heaters I can find go from 2-15 gallons.

I found out that glofish are legal everywhere except CA.

where do you live?

and yea, california has some whack rules, and a fewe good ones...

Sometimes some of these rules/laws are a knee jerk reaction to issues we encountered already.

I grew up in Hawaii, and tehy got some pretty good preemptive rules.

like rabies laws... they ahve no rabies on / in hawaii, so it is really hard to bring dogs and cats

another good law for hawaii, that i didnt realize was a good rule until I moved to california...

no pet snakes in hawaii...they have no wild snakes...  capt cook or one of the other thousands of sailor/pirates whatever brought over mongoose, not sure if it was on purpose or not, but they grew and multiplied and now, no snakes on Hwaii...

I was in construction there, and would dive in and out of bushes and whatever, and when i mnoved here to california and was doing that folks were lookin at me like i was crazy.. they saiid there were snakes and they had to roost/shake them out of the bushes in front of cars...

but anyways, i digress, a lot... hehehehe

A pretty good article on the design and eventual sale of the experimental organism.

maybe a kit would be cheaper where it comes with the filter heater lighting just about everything you need.

btw: ,  there are snakes in hawaii, but they are sea snakes and some other type of snake which is really small and not problematic.. but seasnakes are rare and they really arent seen or encountered very often.. less then spotting JAWS or any of his relatives..

The tank I plan to get is a kit.  It comes with the filter and light.  I already have gravel for it, well actually I read that gravel is not a good idea for a betta.  But now my aunt is offering her old tank, which I know I will have to clean since she is giving it to me cause her fish died, but I think it's a 10 gallon and I don't think I really want to put my betta in it.  I might use it for the glofish.

cleaning isnt hard....

a quart of vinegar and a couple galls of water and a plastic scrubby thing and fifteen minutes...

when you are done, rinse with water, then rinse again with water and baking soda..

If you think there is desease or infection or something at the microbial level then use bleach.. maybe a quart and fill teh tank with water.. bleach goes a long way...

(do the bleach rinse after you clean the tank then rinse with water over night.

if you want on the final rinse you cabn use some of the 'de-clor' products, but really a couple regular water rinses and letting it sit over night or more and the bleach will not be a problem...

Thanks.  She put in a plant from her son's old tank before it died, but I think she had had it for a while.
