12 Gallon Nanocube
« on: April 04, 2010, 02:31:03 PM »
So I had been thinking for quite a few months to get a nanocube.  I had my ten gallon and I was just kinda like meh about it.  I had thought about buying a new powerhead for it cause the hob filter just wasnt getting anything done.  Also I had been looking into getting a new light fixture for it as well.  I had the old pc fixture from my 29 gallon on the 10 gallon for the meantime and it looked pretty ghetto but it got the job done so I was just being lazy with the 10 gallon all in all.  Well I came home from work Friday to find my anemone in the filter, yeah I didnt learn the first time, it was stuck in the tube that sucks the water to the filter so I had to break that to get him out.  So then I was thinking Ive broken the filter thing and I dont really want to fix it or buy a new part for it or buy a new filter and I was thinking about how I need to buy a new light and powerhead so I thought I might as well get a nano and move everything over from the ten gallon that way I wont have to worry about anything(as long as the nano is in good condition and all that)

I got online and a guy had just posted a 12 gallon jbj with LS LR and a few corals so I picked it up yesterday.  He also gave me a frag of birdsnest for free that I put in my 40 gal and so far so good!  I finished getting the aquascape done this morning and made sure all parameters were good then I took a few gallons from the ten and put it in the nano and acclimated my clown and everything looks awesome.  I am really happy with this and guess what I sold the pc light fixture today that I was using on the 10 gallon so I saved a lot more money than if I would have bought a new power head and light fixture for the 10 gallon.

Im leaving right now so ill get some pics up tonight.  Also I added a few pieces of LR to my 40 gal and without me noticing my firefish jumped out!!! I looked on the ground and I was like wtf is that! my fish!! hahaha I picked him up and put him back into the tank and he is doing fine.

andyes, being flexible on your plans and goals is a definite necessity as you saw, getting deals are out there, and if you can get that jbj and save money on the deal and end up with a better system then go for it.

cool, Kyle.

we have a NC "12", which houses our barnacle blennies.  the live macro is a good idea, but you'll need to keep it pruned if you're going to do a reef.

also, remember these tanx really only hold 8 gals and change...they're nowhere near 12 gals, so keep an eye on evap. and keep up on your WC's.

movin on up.....

very nice and yes, almost all tanks are over rated as far as size goes...and then you have to figure a little loss for the rock and sand, but, yea, keep an eye on the evap and all that, but also keep an eye on the heat.. those tank with the lids are notorius for over heating in the summer

you can prop the lid up and have a fan blowing into the crack/gap to cool off the tank

i find that simply leaving the feeding lid open cools the tank quite a bit.

greg, yes, the feeding lid does help but depenbding on ambient temperature and all that, it may not be enuf,

keep in mind that greg lives near the coast and the ambient temps arent that bad, although he does keep a very low tank temperature...

I've kept that in mind and over the weekend I've been watching the temp.  Today when I left for work I did leave the feeding lid open.  I realize that temp will be a concern in the summer time.  If it gets too hot then Ill have to do as suggested, leave the whole hood open and stick a fan on it.

Thanks everybody!  Now I just need to decide if I want to put another fish in there with my clown.  Well of course I want to I guess I mean which one.  Something small...

Oh Ill probably be taking that caulerpa out, ive got some chaeto in the back under a rock that I think will be enough.  I dont want to have to be trimming that caulerpa all the time eh.
