a new look and a few new pieces
« on: April 06, 2010, 08:18:29 PM »
got a candy cane coral a few days ago and also got a brain coral today they look great with my frogspawn. I also decided to redo my aquascape to accomadate my coral. And my candy coral is growing a white film over itself what could that be i wonder if my lights are to close to the water?

is it a possibility that i got to much light on my tank and its burning the candy cane so to speak i got a 18000k 24watt power glo and a 6700k blue actinic 24watt and my tank is only 13" deep plus it sits tight on top of the glass. I wonder if raising up two or three inches would be a good idea

that's not too much light...in fact, you have an awful lot of blue light with an 18k and an actinic, so it's definitely not too much.

nice lobo tho.

my heat stays between 74 and 78 so i'm good there what can i feed my candy cane coral and brain or i should say what do they thrive best on? I feed my tank sinking krill pellets in the morning and then mysis shrimp at night and every 2 or 3 days put about 1 tablespoon of phyto plankton in. also i am yet to test my calcium levels in my tank. my KH is at about 11 and also would it be wise to add strontium to my tank or any supplements to help my mini reef?

Dude...a tablespoon of phytoplankton? Isn't your tank a 10g? There isn't anything that even eats, or requires rather, phyto in your tank. Even if you did, a tablespoon is way too much. That is like dumping a tablespoon of straight fertilizer into the tank. I would skip that in the future.

You candycane will be all sorts of happy eating those krill pellets, and you can just drop them into their mouths. Mysis would also be fine. Wait till the tentacles are out, and just plop the food onto them. The coral knows what to do.

I wouldn't dose anything with that bioload. You have to have a HEAVILY stocked reef for any of the trace elements to get consumed. It is easy to wreak havoc with supplements, particularly in a small setup.

There is something fishy going on here...

the salt mix that is used for your salt water contains strontyum and calcium and all that stuff...

If your tank doesnt have a ton of things that need those things then the water change will prolly be sufficient in maintaining the trace elements

this is very true. Also what is the best way to feed coral and what is the best for them ?
my powerhead and filter blow anything around so its hard for stuff to stay in one place, i'm not saying its crazy but the under water turbelance makes it difficult to target feed.

I have all my powerheads and return pump on one power strip so i can shut them all off at once for feeding my non photosynthetic corals. I usually spot feed them with a turkey baster right after the lights go out.  The greedy fish goto bed and the corals get a chance to eat the meaty bits..

My  brain coral opens its 'mouth' and catches whatever it needs...rather amusing to watch. :0012396:

amusing??

Im totally fascinated by watching corals eat...  Watching the food get moved into the 'mouths' is absolute perfection in evolution...

btw: factoid of the day...

coral reefs take up about 1/2 of 1% of the oceans surface, but coral reefs contain more then 1/4 the amount of life/species of teh entire world...

all that life is such a small area...
