"Little Fuzzy Things"
« on: May 20, 2010, 10:32:07 PM »
My daughter was watching my tank tonight, and was counting the baby snails.  When someone shows interest it the tank, I have to "jump in".

She was asking if the "little fuzzy things" is where the baby snails come from.  I had to ask what little fuzzy things, and she pointed them out, and sure enough there are a couple dozen of these little things.  Upon further looking, some of these are not so little.  The largest is about the size of a dime.

(sorry about the lack of technical info here)

As for descriptions, they look like a hatched black widow egg (I grew up in the desert, and that is what they really look like).  They appear to be hollow, and have an opening with "fingers" around the opening.  The body is fuzzy, somewhat like a cotton ball.

I have a couple of pictures, but I cannot find how to attach them. I will keep trying though.

Right now they seem to located on one rock (and the heater suction cup that is next to the rock).  We have looked at all the other rocks, and have not seen them anywhere else.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hey,   Jocelyn was asking about this too, and without pictures, i am not sure what they can be, other then to guess...

my guess ismaybe it is a sponge....  Sponges come in all shapes and sizes and colors... they typically look fuzzy or softy/squishy, and some have hole/opening, and or little swweppping fingers or threads.

I have had some that look like a small golf ball, and some that are spread out and cover the surface of hte rock...

they are a great indicator that your tank is doing well, btw...

they usually just mysteriously show up in your tank... they are probably brought in as hitchikers on rocks... if you are trading or selling or whatever, you should know that you can not expose sponge to air... always keep it submerged under hte water... you have to submerge the container and fill it with water and while under the water, put the sponge into the bag or contaner then pull it out of the tank... and visa versa when putting into the new tank.. and y es, you will ahve to use some of the bag water into your tank...

but sponge and several other critters are like this...

hey,

yea, you can upload the pics into the gallery, and if you want you can then copyu the link and paste it into the message to have it show up in the message...

OR, you can upload all your pictures and videos to any offsite eb/photo server, like www.photobucket.com   or www.flikr.com

these are secure offsite photo servers....  the benefits are that you can upload and have  backups for all your pictures...  You can share your pictures in several different ways...

You can send people links to the photobucket account, OR you can send links to the individual picture or video, and then people will just click on the link... this way is beneficial for many different ways...

you wont have to send megabiit files all over the place... just the link...

also, you can change and edit the pictures and everone will see the edtied image automaticellly....

but the real benefit is to have all your pictures all together, offsite so you will not lose it when yoiur computer crashes or gets stolen...

and oh yea, you can uplaod pictures to the site when you are away, or on vacation, etc...

ok, posted the pictures in the gallery, under "In My Tank".

from the description, it sounds like you have a pineapple sponge.  harmless, and help filter your water.  i just leave them whenever they show up.

is this what you have?

I have something similar, except the 'body' is looking more like a grain of sand with a small sweeper tentacle or something...

but that picture of the pineapple sponge looks just like that blur...

Thanks for the feedback.  Yes, they look very similar to the pineapple sponge, but not quite as fuzzy (but then again most of them are very small).  I have noticed that all of them are growing on the bottom sides of the rocks, or in the "shade" of something.  They do not appear to be growing in the lights at all.  At last count we found 14 of them (all various sizes).

I tried to use an underwater camera to get a better picture, but I think the camera (or operator) was not doing something right, as all of the pictures look like a failed art project.  Various colors smeared everywhere.... hummmm though to self, have them printed out on a large canvas and hang them in a gallery somewhere.

underwater shots require a TON of light. it's probably easier to just shoot from outside the tank...that is, unless you break into the art scene.
There is something fishy going on here...

pineapple sponges are generally cryptic in nature, and grow behind rocks, in caves, and even in filters.  the specimen you see in the pic was exceptionally fuzzy.
