Coveting
« on: June 13, 2009, 09:29:36 PM »
I know that comparing east and west coast availability is difficult, but here are a couple of things I’m coveting. Any votes?

http://richmond.craigslist.org/for/1204862455.html
for the Sea Cabbage and/or Tang

For the brain coral I haven’t see a photo of and can’t afford anyway.

Thanks,

I think in another listing, he remarks that it's been around 3 years. So size may be a large factor.

But yeah for 200 it better be awesome.

The LFS here has a gorgeous one for $550. I think it was 10 in. and a rare colour too. Just for some regional perspective.

White Fish CAN Jump

My new goby lasted 12 hours. Found him on the floor this morning. He’s SUPPOSED to be a bottom feeder.

I wonder where her planned on going and surprised my dog didn’t eat the evidence.

ur goby jumped??? here im thinking of gettting the diamond ones for my sand and didnt know they were jumpers , if they are!!! also, dont mean to be pessimistic but those corals  u looking at, they will be shipped by a private person not a company rite? me myself i would worry if they did it rite. what if it died enroute or shortly after. how would u get your money back from a private person? unless youve had better experience than me.but go for it if thats what u like and yep good luck!!

Well I think it’s a stupid human error. I didn’t have a lid on but I really didn’t think he needed one. I could have easily put on the entire glass lid. Instead I just had the front lip.

He was a diamondback goby. I do have a little pic. of him peeking out from under a rock before his demise.

The corals I was looking at were local on Craigslist. I would have gone to their houses.

I have bought Berghia Nudibranchs online. While I think they’re overpriced and wouldn’t recommend them unless you could afford to buy a dozen and don’t mind blowing through money, they did arrive alive. In fact I got 6 when I ordered 5 because the seller wanted to ensure I got 5 live ones.

i have a dum qq..are nudibranches like corals or what are they exactly? ive seen pics of them ..they didnt look too pretty but i know a lot of people have them.i dont have a glass lid either but the amount of space on the sides of the lite fixture which is resting on the tank doesnt give much jump room. u are lucky u can go local to buy stuff.in my town in the only lfs i would not buy from them. they dont guarantee anything and i dont like the looks of their tanks.not near a big city like bill and all so everything live i get online and so expensive just to ship.

Nudibranchs look like cooties.

They eat aiptasia only. I fed them a few aiptasia before I added them to my main tank and they are voracious eaters. Yeah they do the job, but I still feel like I they money away.

They’re actually specked brown. They turn white when starving which was useful for the YouTube video

Berghia Nudibranchs are nudibranchs tank raised specifically to eat aptasia. There are other kinds of nudibranchs.

I don’t think they are hard to keep, but maybe hard to breed. Once they get rid of aiptasia, they come out at night to forge for food. At that point, you should collect them and gift them to someone with aiptasia.

My point, if your aiptasia problem is such that you want nudibranchs, a couple of the little guys aren’t going to make a dent.

I can see where they’ve been working and hopefully reproducing. But in general, my aiptasia can reproduce faster that the Nudibranchs and I couldn’t afford an army.

So after I the screen top for my aquarium, I bought another Goby on Saturday to replace the jumper.

As I gingerly open the pitcher in which I was acclimating him to add him to my tank he shoots out.  Poor guy hit wall then floor. He was flopping on the floor. I picked him up by hand any dropped him the tank.

He lies in the water on his back looking pretty dead. Then we see his gills begin to work. 45 seconds later, he swims into a hidey-hole.

Haven’t seen him since but I think I saw a little hill he made. That may have been wishful thinking.

What are the odds he’s actually survived this ordeal?

On a side note: I saw one of the nudibranchs and it was HUGE, more than a inch. So gross looking.

the fish is probably fine.  the real danger of a fish going carpet surfing is when it sits awhile and its gills dry out, which wasn't the case here.  it's not uncommon for these fish to hide for a bit when new, so just give it some time.
