what does one do when they move?
« on: June 30, 2010, 04:31:04 PM »
why...order a new tank or two, of course!

the first will be a room divider tank (84" x 24" x 24", roughly 210 gal).  here is where it will go (pay no attention to my realtor!):

as you can see, it will be viewable from 3 sides.  the "wall" end will be black and the O/F and one return will be there.

i'm trying to figure our the best way to add more returns (i'm guessing it will need to be thru the bottom, but you know me and my "i can't stand anything showing" affliction).  i'm definitely open to suggestions there.

i'll likely use a ReeFlo Dart (3600 gph) as the main return (already have one just sitting around), and will maybe work in the Oceans Motions 4-way (2 on, 2 off).  i dunno about lighting, probably T-5's.

The tank will be a FOWLR + macro setup.

the red X on the fireplace just means that the ugly-You better mean it as in 'donkey' mantel will be going bye-bye and we'll replace it with something nice, as will the nasty green paint and yellow kitchen paint.

perfect location... you can build a cabinet or something outside ont he patio for a fish room...

It can be something simple like those plastic storage boxes/sheds or something much much more.. your choice.

put all your equipement out there.. it will be quieter and less to see...

and check out www.oceansmotions.com   and look in thier forum for ideas on how to hide stuff.

coming thru the bottom is definately possible...and will hide the most. but it has the most risk as if one of thsoe bulkheads leak its all over...

btw:  you can put a floor drain in under the tank and run it out to the patio... might be a little pricy but is is a good deal of insurance to have...

Do not keep fish in the bedroom, the bathroom or the kitchen where they will create material loss!

I used to have a tank in my bedroom and I was in great health and had all sorts of spending money.

Now I don't and I am all sorts of messed up health-wise and I am poor as hell, to boot.

What does Feng Shui have to say about that?

Greg, how hilarious would it be if you had all your bitchin' ultra-classy tanks in the house, and then people wander into the bathroom and there is some goofy goldfish spongebob bubbles-n-pirate chest toilet.
There is something fishy going on here...

Ooh Greg!! other peoples houses syndrome, as felt by most of the female species is upon me!!!!

Loving the room divider tank, have noooo idea how to hide stuff, but will be needing to see pic's as to how you and Renee 'put your stamp' on the new home; you know, where you situate ALL of your tanks.......

On the Feng Shui thing, our tank is in a sitting room that used to be a bedroom!!! how do I fare there I wonder..lol.

I've seen several builds where people running closed loop setups in a peninsula or divider type tank have the returns come through the bottom of the tank. They usually extend PVC from the bulkhead and then drill or stack rock around the pipe to conceal.

with the exception of gregs an renees last tank, most of thier tanks are not high end.. just the livestock in them...

the last tank they installed recently is actyually pretty nice but it too is a 'reworked tank'

thier equipment isnt usually high end either.. but they are high efficiencydepending on when and where they bought it...

the most expensive thing they own, I think, is the RKE, reefkeeper elite, and it isnt installed or used... hehehehe

each of our setups is a learning experience...we try things, sometimes they work well, and will be carried over to successive setups, sometimes things that "look good on paper" don't do so well in the real world.

good skimmers and chillers are really what we spend our money on the most.  FOWLR doesn't really need to be more than efficient (as Bill mentioned) and nice-looking.

as far as the RKE, i think Renee got such a bad taste in her mouth from DA's lack of support and sh*tty attitude, that if we ever go the computerized tank route, it will be an Apex.  i dunno what she plans to do with $800 worth of RKE, but i bet she'd sell it cheap...

here's the latest on our progress with the family room:

cheap-looking, ugly-a$$ mantle demo'd:

had a bit of help, too:

actually, Griffin (13) is a heck of a worker, and really likes learning how to do things.  he has always been that way.  if he starts a project with you, he'll stay till the bitter end.

Oh Oh Oh, ME ME ME.. I'll take the RKE off your hands since i already have a RKL and am familiar with the system. LMK what you'd like for it and we can work something out..  Plus by the time you guys decide to get your Apex i'll have experience with one of those as well so I can come by and help you set it up.
