a peeve and question...
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:33:41 AM »
not that it REALLY matters to me, since most of you know how i feel about clownfish, but:

WHY do folks call A. ocellaris "false percula"????  it CAN'T be because they don't want to use a binomial name, since "percula" IS half of a binomial name.  it seems like it would be LESS trouble to refer to the fish as "ocellaris"...one word, less trouble, scientifically correct, thank you very much.

i think i must need more coffee, but it STILL bugs me...

Hmmmm....all I know is our 'clown' is a nuisance!!!

It has just put paid to the open brain that managed to escape the scourge of the aiptasia infestation. Gutted!!!

Hubby seems to think it will soon be swimming back to the ocean alone...via the great white telephone.lol

BTW
Is there any possibility that Ocellaris and Percula would breed ? we have never been able to decide exactly which we have!!! just thought I'd throw that into the mix.

Hey atleast people that say false percula atleast knows theres a difference. Petco sell 'Percula' clownfish while its scientific name RIGHT BELOW IT, says occellaris. Don't look at me, I say ocellaris.

sorry...it doesn't wash with me.  people call P. russelii "red volitans" when they are most definitely NOT P. volitans.  if one is in the hobby, one should learn what they're keeping.  i'm not saying you should be able to rip the binomials off like they were your natural language, but one should know enuff to call the fish a Russel's lion.

i actually called the John, the owner of Neptune's Reef on this, and he said "it avoids confusion...a "black volitans" is a P. volitans, and a "red volitans" is a Russel's"...but i told him that's pretty thin, and he did agree.

then again, personally, i STILL refer to clownfish as "dinner" for my fish... :0012398:

Gregs fish like it when they can eat and make someone happy at the same time.!!!!

btw: i fixed your post so that the quote thing works

everything has to match... so you have a [ quote ]  (no spaces)  command, you need to turn it off with a [ /quote ]  (no spaces)

same for all commands... what is at the front of your text has to be at the end of your text or the end of where you want it to end...

not sure if that makes sense  and if it does, then also remember that you can NEST commands, that is you can have multiple quotes.. so you can have [ quote ] [ quote ] [ quote ]

and of course at teh end of EACH SPECIFIC QUOTE you would need just one [ /quote ] but you would have to have a total of theree UNQUOTES total
the result would look like this
Quote
Quote
Quote
person #1 said this

person #2 said this

person #3 said THAT

and the bb code would look like this, (without the spaces after the brackets)
[ quote ][ quote ][ quote ]
person #1 said this[ /quote ]person #2 said this[ /quote ]person #3 said THAT[ /quote ]

I'm WAY late on this one...haha,
I don't know much at all about very many fishies. I *believe* mine are ocellaris so that's what I refer to them as. I read about true and false percula during my research but was kind of like "huh??"
