San Diego...
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:46:14 AM »
I'll be heading to San Diego in November and will have lots of time to kill (tagging along with my husband on a business trip).

I know a few on here are in California....(not sure if any are close to San Diego?)

Any tips? Must sees? Things to avoid? What's the weather typically like in mid November? I'm guessing it's probably cool for locals but hoping it'll be *summer* like weather for me...LOL.

Thanks, much appreciated :)

BTW - San Diego Zoo is already on my list!! But that's about it...

Good touristy things are : San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park (where the zoo is located, 15 museums to wander around in as well), Sea World, USS Midway, Gas Lamp district downtown, Cabrillo National Monument is on a point overlooking the entrance to the harbour Neat light house and tide pools to check out critters in. You can check out the Hotel Del Coronado which is located on the beach on north Island.

Most of us that are on here that are in Ca are in the LA area which is about a 2 hour drive. Even november here is pretty mild, San Diego can get nippy though since its right on the water for the most part..

Yes, the SD zoo is awsome. We used to keep a membership before our second child was born. It was much easier to take off and head down with one for the day. We would normally leave our house at 8:00AM and then make the two hour trek down. Pack sandwiches for lunch and then get some sort of food on the way out of town before we headed home at the end of the day.

old town is the gas lamp district isnt it?

and if SD is only two hours away, I would be remiss to suggest that we meet somewhere, the middle or you can come up this way.. there are cool things to do here also, reef related tours or otherwise...

I spent yesterday driving for moer then 14 hours checkin out stuff, so a couple hour drive to SD is nothing... the issue here is that the time doesnt equate to the distance since the driving is averaging 25mph on strange roads...

I truly hope we can meet, and maybe even more of us get together...

just a matter of how much time you got to kill???  i have time, i think... will have to recheck the skidooly when i return to civilization... hehehe

Nope...the gas light district isn't REALLY the same as "Old Town".

San Diego is a beautiful place.

A few things:

Cabrillo Marine Reserve is some of the most well preserved/protected tide pools in the country. Definitely a fun afternoon for someone who loves the ocean, but check the tide charts so you don't show up when it is inaccessible. It is the same thing as the monument Jake mentioned, I just know about the tidepools from working there for a while.

Stone Brewery is in Escondido, which is really close. I am not sure if you are into beer,  but Stone is an awesome brewery and they do the whole tour thing, which is actually pretty fun.

Mission Bay is an awesome place to walk around and maybe grab dinner, or if you are a high roller, they have all sorts of dinner/harbor cruises so you can do both at once. San Diego Harbor is pretty cool too, as it is a military harbor. It is not often that you get the chance to see an aircraft carrier parked in the middle of a city. It really gives you a sense of scale as to just how freaking huge all the Navy vessels are.

I recommend skipping the trip to Tijuana. Too many severed heads in duffel bags these days...
There is something fishy going on here...

Also, be sure to check out the "endangered" Torrey Pines. They are endangered in their native habitat (small area of san diego county), but are one of the most abundantly planted trees in the world. Kinda makes you wonder how they classify that stuff...

You guys rock! Thanks so much :)

Bill I'll be sure and get your contact info before heading out. I'll be there for a week (or more).

Scripps aquarium looks very cool....I was hoping to find something like that. We have nothing....well other than huntsman marine which isn't really comparable AT ALL!! LOL

Would love to check out the mentioned tidepools....

Oh and the Brewery too! I live just down the street (10min walk) from Moosehead Brewery (probably means nothing to all of you but it's our main beer here in NB). So I'd love to check that out....

So much to do!! I knew I could count on you for suggestions :) It's nice to hear it from people I know rather than googling.

**Crossing Tijuana off my list** hehe

Actually, I've spent time in both St. John and Moncton when I was playing Billy Preston's Canadian tour in '74.  I became acquainted with lots of Canadian beers...even Schooner, the "Coors" of Canada!
