This is a 56g that I (and Jake) are setting up for a friend. Goddamn that's some clean plumbing. The closed loop return was nothing short of a miraculous fit, as it uses 4 45s to wrap around to the pump. Thank god for no head pressure on a CL.

where is the suction/inlet for the closed loop?

and what kind of overflow is that, just a pipe thruthe back???  and the return is next to it kinda lower????

I like all the nice hard pipe, but i wont be using unions again... if and when it is time to tear it down, i simple cut will work, and then if you wnt, you can buy unions, or a coupling will be perfect..

but the cost of the unions, plus the potential for leak is something that can be omitted if you wanted, (and maybe a cleaner look)??

although if you didnt put them in, someone would say, hey, why didnt you use unions...

The order from left to right in the photo is: Overflow, redundant overflow, CL intake, sump return, CL return.

Unions are worth it. You can't glue/repair a wet system.

huh?  glue/repair a wet system?? what is that mean???  lets start off with assumptions that the work is dont properly and there is no leak... if there, it wont really matter if you ahve a union or not... and depending on where the leak is, it could be really screwed if you have to tear apart a bulkhed or something like that.

the bulkhead system you have seems not for just in case of leak, but rather to take apart when you move or clean or upgrade or something...  and if that is the case i still stand behind my suggestion to not use them and just cut the pipe at those union locations and then install unions when you move, or use couplings...  by that time, i am guessing it could be years, hopefully...

also, i would put unions and valves just above the closed loop pump, and return pump, so you can just disconnect the pump and pull it out for routine maintenance, prior to failures... and repairs... you will ahve to unscrew the union and pull the pump and a few feet of water filled pipe out to maintain the pump...

It is definitely set up for servicing and breakdown. Remember how much it was going to suck to move your 180? poo poo happens, it's inevitable. Might as well head it off at the pass.

My comment was saying that it is going to suck to cut and then patch a pipe when you want to clean out your pump every few months, particularly when it is stocked and running and the introduction of volatile petroleum products can wreak havoc, not to mention the cure time and repeated chance for failure. I have never had a union leak. I deal with a hell of a lot of them.

I agree that there should be a union closer to the pump. I was thinking it would be ok, but due to the difference in length of the pipes, spillage would be inevitable when you unscrewed the unions. Good thing I posted this before gluing.

And I didn't say best ever, I said cleanest ever.

Nice work, Lanny...and I use unions too, altho I normally prefer to work in hose, but I agree w/being able to take things apart if needed.
