Heater help/suggestions
« on: August 25, 2010, 09:58:27 AM »
I'm looking for a replacement heater. Mine still works, but I don't really trust it. It's OLD, came with the tank when I bought it used about 8yrs ago.

So I'd like to replace it (for peace of mind...LOL) and keep this one as a spare.

I know I can google best heaters but was wondering if anyone has one they swear by....or any they steer clear from.

I have a 55gal and am currently using a 300w hagen (not sure of the model).

Thank you!!!

I used to swear by the old, green Ebo-Jager heaters, but I don't think the Eheim-Jagers are as good, altho they're still pretty decent.  We also have some (I want to say Marineland is the mfr) Stealth heaters that work OK.

Mind you, here in So. CA, Renee & I don't really run heaters to warm our setups, but rather to keep the temp steady on our chilled setups.

I did notice that the marineland stealth is one of the top sellers on BigAl's canada....which is normally who I order from.

Thanks for your input. I'm jealous, mine runs pretty steady to keep the tank warm enough from October thru April/May.

Also as of now mine is hang on back, is submersible the way to go?

Go with submersible...they're easier to place and if you happen to drop it into the tank, no worries.

i use the ehiem-jeager heaters which seem to do a good job, again like greg said its more to keep the temp from dropping too far. The good thing about those heaters is you can calibrate them by lifting the little knob and turning the dial. Mine was off by 5 or so degrees when i got it. I've heard good things about the rena smart heaters as well..

i like the titanium heaters, either the brand name or really any all metal heater... they dont break/shatter, and htey have a remote thermostat, which is usually able to calibrate...

if you can, I suggest gettin two smaller heaters... have one set to come on a few degrees after the first one, so you not only save money, but you have some back up/fail safe features...  do not get a 'larger' heater then you need... lean towards the smaller side/scale, but not too much.

and depending on where you live, i would have a spare heater in a box/drawer somewhere...

I dunno if they cleaned-up their issues, but there were a whole lot of WON Ti heaters that had all sorts of issues from failure to work at all to sticking "on".  I know this because we were looking into them for mantis tanx.

Perhaps Billy-Bob has a brand he prefers...

I'm running an Aqua - one...submersible.
Replaced the original one that came with the tank, which is now in the drawer 'just in case'.

WON brothers?  or chinese something or other???  yea, i heard a lot of bad stuff, but i did have one that worked flawlessly... they have a remote thermostat that is huge.. unsightly big...

I like having teh controller work thru the aqua controller for redundant/back up / safety...

along with having two smaller heaters incase one gets stuck on, at least it wont boil the tank quickly...

I didnt mean to suggest a brand of titanium,, just the model heater that isnt glass and is all 'stainless steel'... (I doubt they are titanium)

stainless steel will rust but they arent harmful, at least not a little bit of surface rust...

when they rust you can sand them down with 100 grit sand paper... you can use a little hand sander too... it will look like new when you are done sanding...

this works for kitchen appliances too.. except i would suggest 220 grit paper and to start in a corner and make sure... sand with the 'grain'...

wow, off subject there...
